Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, announced on Thursday that he will not compete in the 2026 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club next week.
The 55-year-old golfer cited a personal health matter affecting his family as the reason for his absence and indicated he will step away from competitive golf for an extended period.
Mickelson, who was scheduled to make his 33rd appearance, has only missed the event once since 1995, with his most recent top finish coming as runner-up in 2023. He had already sat out the first four events of the 2026 LIV Golf season due to the same family issue before returning two weeks ago in South Africa, where he tied for 48th.
Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley expressed support, noting that Mickelson will be missed and offering well wishes for his family.
“We know how much Phil loves the Masters tournament, and he will be missed by everyone in Augusta next week,” Ridley said in a statement, via CBS Sports. “He has our complete support as he takes time to be with his family.”
This marks the first Masters since 1994 without either Mickelson or Tiger Woods, who is also stepping away to focus on his health following a recent DUI arrest.
Mickelson’s record at Augusta includes 16 top-10 finishes, second only to Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan.
