Scottie Scheffler considering skipping tournaments before majors

Scottie Scheffler was on a big hot streak entering the U.S. Open this week, but he hasn’t fared that great at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, which has him considering making a tweak in the future.

Scheffler shot 1-over 71s on Thursday and Saturday, and a four-over 74 in the second round on Friday. He’s at six over par entering Sunday’s final round, which is a disappointment for the player who entered the major as the favorite to win it.

Scheffler told reporters after his round on Saturday that he feels playing in the Memorial Tournament last weekend may have affected him this week.

“I thought about that a bit yesterday. I think going into the major championships, especially the ones we know are going to be really challenging, it may be in my best interest not to play the week before,” Scheffler said Saturday.

Asked Scheffler if he was feeling the effects of his Memorial win: "I thought about that a bit yesterday. I think going into the major championships, especially the ones we know are going to be really challenging, it may be in my best interest not to play the week before."

The 27-year-old golfer won last weekend at Muirfield for his fifth win this year. He has won events in consecutive weeks twice this year (the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship in March; and the Masters and RBC Heritage in April). Scheffler has proven he can win events in back-to-back weeks, so maybe saying he needs to take a week off before the U.S. Open is him just talking out of frustration over what’s transpired at Pinehurst.
