It has been more than four years since Lindsey Vonn retired from competitive skiing, but the U.S. Olympic legend is officially making a comeback.

Vonn announced on Thursday that he has begun training again to race for the U.S. Ski Team. The 40-year-old has had numerous injuries in her career and most recently underwent a partial knee replacement in April, but she said she has been skiing “without pain.” Vonn called her comeback an “incredible” journey and said she wants to “continue to share my knowledge of the sport with these incredible women.”

Vonn’s last competitive race was in February 2019. Her last Olympic appearance came in 2018, when she took home a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

A three-time Olympic medalist, Vonn once held the record for most World Cup race victories with 82. That mark was surpassed last year by fellow U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin, who is now up to 97 wins and still racing.

It is unclear if Vonn will try to compete in the next Winter Olympics, which will be held in February 2026 in Italy.
