Michael Phelps going to rehab after second DUI

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps says he is going to rehab to address his second DUI.

Phelps was arrested early Tuesday for driving under the influence. He failed a field sobriety test and his BAC was nearly twice the legal limit. He previously was arrested for DUI in 2004.

Phelps, who has won 18 Olympic gold medals during his storied swimming career, announced on Twitter his plans to receive treatment.

“The past few days have been extremely difficult,” he wrote Sunday morning. “I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I’m going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself.

“Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”

If Phelps has been caught twice for driving under the influence, you have to wonder how many times he may have done it without getting pulled over.

Even with a rehab program Phelps still has plenty of time before the 2016 Summer Games in Rio — you know, the ones Phelps said he wasn’t going to compete in before ending his retirement.
