Thousands of soccer fans plan march to demand Alexis Sanchez break up with girlfriend

Alexis Sanchez

Thousands of Chilean soccer fans are planning a march to protest the relationship involving Alexis Sanchez and his current girlfriend.

Sanchez plays for Arsenal in the Premier League as well as the Chilean national team. The forward has been involved in multiple trade rumors lately and has been frustrating Arsenal fans. Even manager Arsene Wenger made it seem like the team would prefer to be without Sanchez.

Well Chilean fans are dissatisfied with Sanchez too, and they feel the forward’s relationship with girlfriend Mayte Rodriguez is partly to blame for his poor form.

A Facebook group called “La Marea Roja Valparaíso” started an event scheduled for Oct. 5 in which they plan to march in protest of Sanchez’s relationship. The event is titled “MARCHA PARA QUE ALEXIS TERMINE CON MAYTE Y VUELVA A SU NIVEL” and says they hope that a breakup would allow Sanchez to return to his previous level of play in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

As of Thursday evening, over 56,000 people were marked on Facebook as “Going” to the event, with another 71,000 “Interested.” That’s a lot of people.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a fan base upset with a girlfriend and blamed them for a player’s struggles (this recent one comes to mind), but this might be the most extreme measures we’ve seen fans take in protest.
