Former US soccer star Megan Rapinoe and former WNBA star Sue Bird announced big news on Friday. The two announced publicly that they have broken up.
In a statement posted to social media, Rapinoe said she and Bird had “made the decision to separate as a couple.” The two had been together since 2017.

The two also hosted a podcast together, “A Touch More,” which will also apparently be ending.
Bird and Rapinoe first met at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and have been together since then. They were engaged in 2020, though they never formally married.
Bird and Rapinoe had one of the most high-profile relationships in the sports world, as Bird was a WNBA star and Rapinoe a standout soccer player. Bird was a 13-time All-Star in her career before announcing her retirement in 2022. Rapinoe retired a year later after a career that saw her win two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal.
