A recent FCS game between Lamar University and East Texas A&M featured one of the worst gambling beats of all time, but it led to what could be the best “Bad Beats” segment Scott Van Pelt has ever produced.
Van Pelt and co-host Steve Coughlin were alerted to the wild finish in Saturday night’s Lamar vs. East Texas A&M game by a viewer named “Big Mo” in Las Vegas. The two late-night “SportsCenter” hosts expressed disbelief that anyone would have bet on such a little-known game, but they sure seemed glad someone did.
East Texas A&M was a 7.5-point underdog in the game and was leading 23-20 when Lamar attempted a game-tying field goal with 15 seconds remaining. East Texas A&M called for a leverage penalty, which gave Lamar a first down. Lamar then scored a go-ahead touchdown with 3 seconds left.
Again, East Texas A&M was getting 7.5 points in the game, so they still led by 3.5 for gambling purposes. The game seemed more than over for anyone who wagered on it, but then disaster struck for Lions backers.
East Texas A&M received the ensuing kickoff and tried a lateral in hopes of scoring a miracle touchdown. Instead, a Lamar player came away with the ball and walked in for a touchdown. Lamar won the game 33-23 and covered the 7.5-point spread.
Van Pelt hilariously pointed out that the two teams were playing next to a gas station. The entire segment is worth watching:

A "Bad Beats" segment you have to see to believe 😂 @StanfordSteve82 pic.twitter.com/awfExlUlNI
“They’re playing next to a gas station! Mo, God bless you, Mo. That ticket was supposed to cash. … That’s a catastrophe, man,” Van Pelt said as he and Coughlin laughed hysterically.
We have seen more than a few bad gambling beats over the years, but it is hard to imagine what it must have felt like to have had East Texas A&M +7.5 and losing that bet. Fortunately, Mo may have been the only person in America who had it.
