Curt Schilling Doesn’t Want the Red Sox to Make the Playoffs

Curt Schilling is the ultimate pontificator. He’ll opine on any subject, and what he doesn’t know about the topic he’ll pick up by reading a “___ for Dummies” book. Somehow people confused Schilling’s ability to inject his opinion on any topic for actually having worthwhile insight. The result is we’re left being subjected to his opinions as a “baseball analyst” in his retirement.

During a guest appearance on WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan show Tuesday, Schilling was asked about the Red Sox’s play during September.

“It’s kind of crashing down around them,” Schilling said. “Somebody asked me last night about them making the playoffs. You know how I feel about these guys and how I feel about Terry [Francona]. I don’t want them to make the playoffs because I don’t think they have a chance to go anywhere. I don’t think they’re physically going to be able to compete. From a pitching perspective, you’ve got Josh and you’ve got Jon, and they’re going to have to be perfection.”

Schilling explained that the Red Sox would have to use a three-man rotation in the postseason if they make it. He added that he doesn’t think the Red Sox will make the postseason despite being up two games in the wild card.

“I don’t think they’re going to make it,” Schilling said. “I think there’s been a huge momentum shift and I can see Tampa winning out.”

Of course he can, because Schilling is the ultimate optimist. He also said the Red Sox are “in no position right now to beat a Tigers team or a Rangers team.”

Way to contribute to the “sky is falling” mentality, buddy. Guess he forgets that the Red Sox were in no position to beat the Yankees when they were down 3-0 in the playoffs.

To clarify, Schilling later said in the interview that he does hope the Red Sox make the playoffs. The backtracking just reveals Schilling’s nature; in the same interview he says he doesn’t want the Red Sox to make the playoffs, he also says he does. Schilling: another walking contradiction.
