Steve Nash feels ‘weird’ about getting ring from Warriors

Steve Nash finally has his championship ring, but it doesn’t feel right to him.

In a vlog post to his YouTube channel this week, the retired point guard great showed off his ring from the Golden State Warriors that finally arrived in the mail but explained why he felt odd about receiving it.

“It’s pretty weird after playing for 18 years, like fighting every day trying to win a ring and then winning a ring as a consultant,” said Nash. “It’s crazy. I don’t know, it doesn’t seem right in a way.

“I’m proud to be a part of the organization,” he continued. “I’m really proud of everyone involved — players, coaches, staff, everyone. But when you’re a player, I don’t know, you’re a player. I guess it’s different if you became the head coach … But [I’m] pretty lucky to be a part of that group and enjoying the ride and all the small contributions I can make are rewarding. But it’s just not the same when you’re not playing.”

Nash, now 43 years old, won two MVPs and made eight All-Star teams over that 18-year career but never advanced past the Conference Finals as a player. He was officially a part-time player development consultant for the Warriors on their championship-winning team last season, a position that he still holds.

Even if Nash has played a bigger role for the Dubs than many realize, it seems that his sense of accomplishment is nowhere close to what it would have been had he won a ring during his playing career instead.
