Brock Osweiler doesn’t want to be like Tom Brady, is not a ‘puppet’

Brock Osweiler

When Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans, he knew he would be playing under a head coach whose career success has a lot to do with having helped coach Tom Brady. That doesn’t mean Osweiler has any interest in emulating the four-time Super Bowl champion.

In a recent interview with John McLain of the Houston Chronicle, Osweiler spoke about Texans coach Bill O’Brien’s history with Brady.

“They refer to Tom Brady a lot. With all due respect to Coach O’Brien and Coach Godsey, I’ve told them I’m going to be me,” Osweiler said. “I’m not here to be a puppet, if you will. I’m going to be who I am and believe in what I bring to the table every day.”

The Texans coaching staff likely is not asking Osweiler to be Brady or Peyton Manning, who Osweiler played four years with in Denver. That said, studying some of Brady’s tendencies is never a bad idea. He is one of the greatest players in the history of the game, after all.

For what it’s worth, Osweiler said he learned a lot from Manning.

“Probably the biggest thing I learned from Peyton was how to approach this job as a pro every day,” he said. “By watching Peyton every day for four years, he showed me how to do the job the right way. This job is your life. It consumes you.”

Perhaps Osweiler doesn’t feel the need to mirror Brady’s success because he has someone very special helping him get his career in Houston off on the right foot. Texans fans should be all for Osweiler wanting to be himself, but one of those shiny things Brady wears on four of his fingers wouldn’t hurt.
