The Minnesota Vikings are not making any formal announcements, but it sounds as if their quarterback battle is all but decided already.
Kyler Murray is seen as a “heavy favorite” to win the job out of camp ahead of JJ McCarthy, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. There are multiple indicators that back that up. Murray has consistently received roughly two-thirds of the snaps with the starters, while has left McCarthy in a situation where he has to lead the No. 2 offense against the No. 1 defense.
The Vikings appear content with how Murray has adapted to their offense. While McCarthy has not necessarily performed poorly in practices, there are no indications he has outperformed Murray, or improved enough to stake a claim to the starting quarterback job.
Murray has been the favorite to land the job basically since he signed. There have certainly been some bumps in the road, but Murray is more experienced and more proven at the NFL level. He appears to be showing that in camp so far.
The Vikings are desperate for better quarterback play this year. Though they went 9-8 last season, they did not get much from McCarthy, who had more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes (11). At times, he simply seemed overwhelmed, and there were even reports that the Vikings had to simplify their offense just to get better play out of him.
