Jerod Mayo announces retirement via Instagram
Players are walking away from the NFL at young ages with increased frequency in recent years. On Tuesday, linebacker Jerod Mayo added himself to the list.
At just 29-years-old, Mayo has decided to end his playing days and start on the next chapter of his life. He announced the choice via his Instagram account.
Mayo spent his entire eight-year career with the Patriots. He was the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008 and went on to carve out a career that saw him named to two Pro Bowls.
Unfortunately, each of Mayo’s last three season ended with him being placed on injured reserve. In 2013, a torn pectoral was the reason. A torn patella tendon ended his 2014 season. New England placed Mayo on injured reserve this past season after he injured his shoulder in a game against the Chiefs.
In 103 games, Mayo recorded 11 sacks, three interceptions, 8 forced fumbles, and 7 fumble recoveries.
