In a rare turn of events on Wednesday, a trade between the Eagles and Lions was called off because one of the players involved failed his physical. Trades in sports are always pending a physical, but there are very few instances where the physical presents a problem and voids the deal. Not only did a failed physical prevent Jerome Harrison from being sent to the Eagles in exchange for Ronnie Brown this week, it may have saved his life.
As ESPN shared with us on Thursday, doctors discovered Harrison had a brain tumor when examining him as part of standard procedure after Philadelphia and Detroit agreed to the deal. The tumor is now being treated, but without a trade in place it would not have been detected. Harrison is not expected to play again this season, but his prognosis is positive and career should not be in jeopardy.
Not that you needed anyone to tell you this, but the world works in mysterious ways. When word surfaced that a failed physical had squashed the deal we were all curious about what could have happened, but I doubt anyone thought it was something that serious. Hopefully Harrison will be able to make a full recovery and get back to playing football very soon.
