Mike McCarthy ducks questions about job security

Mike McCarthy

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy isn’t being drawn into comments on his job security.

After a round of rumors flared up after the Packers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, McCarthy simply said that rumors come with the territory and he would continue to focus on improving the team.

“That’s the job,” McCarthy said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “That’s the way this business has gone. I’m not going to get into comparables, but at the end of the day that’s part of the job responsibility of the head coach.

“We set a standard here the past 12 years and it’s our responsibility to play to that standard. That’s the way we approach it, but that’s a blanket, general evaluation. There’s obviously more that goes into that. But at the end of the day, there’s so much that goes into each and every game throughout a seven-day period — obviously we’re on a 10-day stretch here — and that’s really where the energy has to focus.”

The criticism of McCarthy comes from more than results, though Green Bay’s 4-5-1 record certainly has a lot to do with it. It’s the fact that Thursday night’s game was filled with high-profile coaching mistakes in the late stages that cost the Packers a better chance at winning. It looks like another wasted season in Green Bay, and the backlash to that may mean the end of McCarthy’s tenure.
