Tony Romo will try to qualify for U.S. Open
Now that Tony Romo is finished playing football, he’ll have a bit more time to pursue another one of his passions — golf.
Romo, who has long golfed in his spare time, has signed up to try to qualify for the U.S. Open. According to ESPN, nearly 9,500 players have signed up for the event, and Romo will have to negotiate a pair of qualifiers to make it to the main tournament.
Romo’s first step will be a local qualifier on Monday. If he advances past that, he will play in a sectional qualifier on June 5.
This is not the first time Romo has tried to make the U.S. Open field. He reached sectional qualifying in 2010, but withdrew when it was riddled with a pair of weather delays after shooting a 71.
Romo loves golf so much that, by his own admission, he nearly made a career teaching it. His new role as a commentator won’t require as much offseason training as being a quarterback did, so he can hit the links far more often now.
