Von Miller considers franchise tag ‘league-wide problem’ he can help fix

Von Miller is taking on a new tone in his holdout with the Denver Broncos — he is crusading against the franchise tag.

Miller appeared on ESPN on Monday and said he considers the franchise tag a problem, and by refusing to play under it, he can help fix it.

“No, I’m not gonna play on the franchise tag. It just doesn’t make sense in any way,” Miller said on ESPN, via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. “I’ve never really played for money. It’s bigger than that for me. It’s a league-wide problem that I feel like I’m in a situation to help out with.”

The franchise tag has existed since 1993. Miller seems to feel that it hurts players and keeps them from getting a fair deal.

Miller and the Broncos are talking again, and it’s in the best interests of both parties to work something out. Miller has made it clear, though, that he will not be playing under the tag in 2016. Apparently he’s doing so for the good of the game, though it’s pretty unlikely that one holdout will fundamentally change the game.
