Baseball Hall of Fame reveals when Pete Rose could be inducted

The National Baseball Hall of Fame has revealed when Pete Rose could be inducted after his lifetime ban from baseball was lifted.

In a statement, Hall of Fame chairman Jane Forbes Clark confirmed that Rose would be eligible for induction now that his ban has been lifted. However, Rose’s candidacy will not be considered until December 2027, when the Hall of Fame’s Classic Baseball Era Committee will next meet.

“The National Baseball Hall of Fame has always maintained that anyone removed from Baseball’s permanently ineligible list will become eligible for Hall of Fame consideration,” Clark said in a statement. “Major League Baseball’s decision to remove deceased individuals from the permanently ineligible list will allow for the Hall of Fame candidacy of such individuals to now be considered. The Historical Overview Committee will develop the ballot of eight names for the Classic Baseball Era Committee — which evaluates players who made their greatest impact on the game prior to 1980 — to vote on when it meets next in December 2027.”

This means Rose will not be inducted until the 2028 ceremony at the earliest. In addition, his candidacy would need to be approved by 12 of the 16 members of the Classic Baseball Era Committee.

Just because Rose is now eligible for induction does not automatically mean he will be. Modern voters have punished players such as Barry Bonds for alleged steroid use, even though Bonds was never formally banned from the sport. There is some chance that certain committee members may have similar feelings about Rose and his alleged betting on baseball.

Rose’s ban from baseball was lifted on Tuesday, with commissioner Rob Manfred determining that a lifetime ban can no longer apply if the individual in question has died. His decision also means that “Shoeless” Joe Jackson can also be considered for induction by the same committee.

Rose predicted that he would ultimately be inducted into the Hall of Fame after his death. He may wind up being correct about that, but it will be a few more years until that decision is made.
