Bryce Harper helps high schooler ask date to prom in viral video

Bryce Harper helps a high schooler with a prom request

Bryce Harper has been bringing joy to Philadelphia Phillies fans for more than five years now, but the memorable moment he created for a pair of high schoolers this week will be tough to top.

A video went viral on Monday that showed Harper helping a New Jersey high school student ask a classmate to the prom. The student, Haddonfield Memorial High School senior Jake Portello, told FOX29’s “The Phantastic Sports Show” that he simply knocked on Harper’s door on Monday to ask for the assist.

“I knocked on his door. He seemed cool with it at first. Then he was like, ‘Can I get your email so we can plan this out?’ And as I was leaving he was like, ‘Why don’t we do this right now?” Portello said.

Fortunately, the starstruck young lady, who is named Guilia, said yes. The moment was captured on video and had been viewed more than 1 million times as of Tuesday.

Portello said he did not even expect Harper to come to the door, let alone fulfill the request.

“I wasn’t expecting this, I thought it’d be something cool among my friends and people in my town and stuff,” Portello explained. “I didn’t even expect him to open the door in the first place.”

Harper has always been one to show appreciation for fans, but his assist to Portello is some of his best work. That is a story that will last a lifetime for the two high schoolers.
