Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suarez traded from Reds to Mariners
The Seattle Mariners are making a very serious effort to end their playoff drought, and that includes swinging a big trade on Monday.
The Mariners have agreed to acquire outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Eugenio Suarez from the Cincinnati Reds, according to multiple reports. The Reds will receive a trio of prospects from Seattle in return.
The Mariners are clearly on the hunt for offense. Winker was an All-Star in 2021, hitting .305 with 24 home runs for Cincinnati. Both of those were career highs, and it remains to be seen how Winker will transition from Cincinnati’s hitter-friendly confines to the more pitcher-friendly environment in Seattle. Suarez also has massive power, with three 30-homer seasons to his name. He has roughly $30 million left on his contract, which runs through 2024. By taking that deal on, the Mariners likely did not have to give up as much to receive Winker and Suarez.
The Mariners have been linked to bats since free agency reopened late last week. Winker certainly fits the bill, and the Mariners obviously see an opening in the AL West.
