The Washington Nationals made a major move earlier this season to acquire reliever Kelvin Herrera, but his year appears to be over and the move hasn’t paid dividends.
The Nationals placed Herrera on the disabled list Monday with a torn Lisfranc ligament in his left foot that he sustained while running to cover first in Sunday’s game. Herrera will seek a second opinion, but according to Dan Kolko of MASN, it’s likely too late to get him back on the field before the season ends.
Kelvin Herrera is heading to get a second opinion on his torn Lisfranc ligament, but based on the sheer timing here and the rehab needed, it appears he’s done for the year.

The Nationals are pretty much out of the playoff race, so this isn’t a backbreaker from that standpoint. It is, however, perfectly emblematic of how their season has gone. Herrera was acquired from the Kansas City Royals in June and was expected to solidify the back of Washington’s bullpen. He was instead plagued by injury, first with his shoulder and now with his foot. He wasn’t even particularly good when healthy, posting a 4.34 ERA in 21 appearances. It was a lost season for him, and not ideal while heading into free agency.
