There will be two Acuñas playing in the NL East in 2025.
The New York Mets on Wednesday told Luisangel Acuña that he has made their 26-player roster, according to a few different reporters.
Acuña, 23, appeared in 14 games for the Mets last season. He went 12/39 (.308) with two doubles, a triple and three home runs. He played most of his games at shortstop but also saw some action at DH and second base.

Acuña was initially signed by the Texas Rangers. They traded him to the Mets in 2023 for Max Scherzer. Much like his brother, Ronald, Luisangel has shown good speed throughout his professional baseball career. He stole 198 bases in the minors while batting .280 with a .752 OPS. He has mostly played both middle infield positions in the minors, as well as center field.
Luisangel was competing with Brett Baty for the Mets’ starting second base job. It looks like Baty will end up winning that job thanks to a hot spring training that has seen him hit .353 with an 1.186 OPS. But Acuña hit .250 and stole 3 bases and appears to be set to round out the team’s major league roster.
This outcome will give the Acuña family two sons in the majors. Ronald, 27, was the NL MVP in 2023. He is returning from a torn ACL suffered last season.
