Zlatan Ibrahimovic is never one to shy away from a chance to take a jab at Alexi Lalas.
That was on display again during FOX’s Tuesday coverage of the Round of 16 FIFA World Cup showdown between Argentina and Egypt. While talking about Argentina superstar Lionel Messi’s missed penalty kick in the first half, Ibrahimovic found a way to use the subject as a jumping-off point to dunk on Lalas.
“Everyone misses PKs,” Ibrahimovic said. “I’ve missed PKs. Thierry [Henry] has missed PKs. Alexi was never asked to take PKs so he couldn’t miss.”
Aside from his all-world soccer skills during his playing days, Ibrahimovic is known perhaps just as much for his spicy tongue. Lalas has been on the receiving end of some of Ibrahimovic’s snarky quips during the World Cup, and what makes it even more interesting is the vast difference in their respective football resumés.
As for the match, Messi’s missed penalty kick ultimately did not matter for Argentina, who battled back from a 2-0 deficit to complete a come-from-behind 3-2 victory.
Messi atoned for his miss by assisting on teammate Cristian Romero’s goal in the 79th minute and scoring a goal himself for the equalizer in the 83rd minute. Enzo Fernández took it home for Argentina with the game-winning goal in stoppage time.
