The Boston Red Sox placed starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi on the 10-day injured list over the weekend because of an elbow injury, but it sounds like he will be out a lot longer than that.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Eovaldi is set to undergo surgery to remove “loose bodies” from his elbow. That typically refers to bone fragments.
#RedSox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will undergo surgery tomorrow to remove the loose bodies in his elbow, a source tells The Athletic. Had similar procedure in 2018 and missed two months while with #Rays.

Eovaldi, who signed a four-year, $68 million deal with the Red Sox over the winter, had a similar procedure last March when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays. He missed two months, so that could be a realistic timeline for how long he will be out this time around. That would mean the right-hander could potentially return to Boston’s rotation at some point in June.
Prior to being placed on the injured list, Eovaldi allowed 14 earned runs in 21 innings pitched. The good news is he recovered nicely from the elbow procedure last year and went on to become a postseason hero for them. While the latest injury is obviously a concern after they invested so much money in him, the Red Sox are hoping for a similar bounce-back from Eovaldi this time.
