Pedro Martinez: Jose Fernandez had more talent than me
Baseball lost a potential future Hall of Famer over the weekend when Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was tragically killed in a boating accident. While reflecting on Fernandez’s career, Pedro Martinez reminded us of just how good the 24-year-old was.
Martinez, who was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame himself, expressed his condolences and said he believes Fernandez had more talent than him.
“It’s devastating for all of us. I feel extremely sad for this kid,” Martinez said on TBS. “I saw a better talent than I was lose his life. It’s really sad. I don’t have words to express how bad I feel not only for him, for baseball and also his family.”
Pedro also referred to Fernandez as “probably one of the best arms that was ever gonna play in the game.”
It’s truly sickening to think of everything Fernandez had ahead of him in life. In addition to being arguably the best young pitcher in baseball, he was also about to become a father. Fernandez’s death will be felt far beyond the baseball diamond.
