Carlos Mendoza is still in the clear.
Amid the struggles of the New York Mets and the recent firings of managers Alex Cora and Rob Thomson, there seems to be no increase in the temperature of Mendoza’s seat.
According to Mets reporter Steve Gelbs of SNY, the Mets have no intention of serving Mendoza his walking papers.
“I can tell you as a fact, not a speculation here, as fact – they don’t want to fire Carlos Mendoza. They like Carlos Mendoza. They feel like this [Mets’ struggles] is not Mendoza’s fault,” Gelb said on Wednesday.
New York has the second-highest payroll in MLB in 2026. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers have a fatter bankroll on players, but they have something to show for the money they are spending.
The Mets, on the other hand, have the worst record overall in the big leagues. They are 10-20 after suffering a 14-2 loss to the Washington Nationals at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y.
Yet, New York remains loyal to Mendoza, who is in his third season managing the club.
Gelb indicated that the Mets could potentially sing a different tune about their trust in Mendoza if the team continues its downward spiral. But given where the Mets are in the standings, one has to wonder about their threshold for losing before they start seriously considering a managerial change.
