Jordan Hicks already back to throwing bullpens after Tommy John surgery

Jordan Hicks Cardinals

Meteor hurler Jordan Hicks appears to be making very good progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

St. Louis Cardinals president John Mozeliak said this week that the hard-throwing closer has recently advanced to throwing bullpens, specifically 30-pitch sessions of “moderate intensity.” Mozeliak adds that Hicks is on pace to return to competition around what would have been the All-Star break but says that the current situation as well as Hicks’ Type 1 diabetes have slowed down his calendar a bit, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The 23-year-old Hicks, who is known for being able to throw 104-105 mph, suffered a torn UCL in his throwing elbow last year and underwent Tommy John surgery in June, roughly ten months ago. The procedure usually takes about 12 to 15 months to recover from.

We have already seen how the current layoff is affecting the rehab process for other pitchers coming off Tommy John surgery, but it sounds like Hicks is coming along quite well in terms of what he is able to control in his recovery.
