The Chicago White Sox had some major issues getting the tarp on the field for a rain delay Sunday, prompting a barrage of jokes about the situation.
A huge storm descended upon Chicago during the seventh inning of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, but the White Sox seemingly waited too long to put the tarp on the field. The team’s grounds crew had to compete with torrential rain and strong winds as they tried to get the tarp on the field, and it did not go well.
I’ve never seen a grounds crew struggle so badly to get the tarp on the field. pic.twitter.com/azuAgy23dR

Video from the stands showed that it actually started hailing while the grounds crew was trying to do its job.
The moment it started hailing…@whitesox grounds screw couldn’t get the tarp across the whole field because it got swamped so they had to canvass the first base line with various smaller tarps#whitesox pic.twitter.com/u2IPPIUT8j

Eventually, the grounds crew essentially gave up, and wound up using small tarps to cover the parts of the field they could not get to with the main one. The patchwork effort was widely mocked on social media as being typical of a White Sox organization that lost 121 games in 2024.
We’re getting close to the finished product.

The White Sox have a lot of tarps. pic.twitter.com/QfRyuvsGuF
That’s hilarious and perfectly sums up the White Sox.

Watching the white Sox grounds crew mess up putting the tarp on the field is a great summary of this organization.

This tarp situation just sums up the Angels and White Sox so well. Shambles

The grounds crew appeared to be doing the best they could in a very rough situation. They certainly didn’t fumble the assignment quite as badly as this grounds crew did a few years ago.
If anything, it is somewhat emblematic of the chaos and failure that the organization has become known for in recent years. By the looks of things, it will be another very long season for the South Siders.
