Andre Drummond clarifies comment about being ‘excited’ for free agency

Andre Drummond made some remarks recently about his impending free agency that many took to mean he wants to leave the Detroit Pistons, but the All-Star big man says they were misinterpreted.

A reporter asked Drummond over the weekend if he is looking forward to being a free agent next summer, and Drummond admitted he is “excited.”

“Yeah, it should be fun, I’m excited,” he said, per Marlowe Alter of the Detroit Free Press. “I think I’m the only one that has a big contract coming up that year.”

Does that mean he is anxious to get out of Detroit? No. Drummond later took to social media to clarify that he loves playing for the Pistons but is simply excited about experiencing free agency for the first time.

In fairness, what 26-year-old wouldn’t be excited to have a bunch of employers begging to pay him nine figures? Some players enjoy being courted in free agency, and Drummond has never experienced that since he signed a five-year extension with the Pistons a few years back. That doesn’t mean he wants to leave, and Detroit can pay him far more money than any other team.

If you believe what Blake Griffin said recently about playing for the Pistons, perhaps there is reason to believe Drummond will want to stick around. In the meantime, he’s going to enjoy the thought of all the big-money offers that will be coming his way.
