Cade Cunningham volunteers to pay Isaiah Stewart’s fines

If the Detroit Pistons think Isaiah Stewart needs to better control his behavior, they certainly aren’t showing it.

Pistons guard Cade Cunningham was asked Saturday if he would be willing to pay Stewart’s fines, particularly in the wake of the center’s ejection during last week’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Cunningham laughed, but stuck up for his teammate.

“I would. That’s my brother, man,” Cunningham said. “He’s the ultimate competitor. He’s somebody that’s going to have your back like nobody else. It’s costly, but he’s the man. I wouldn’t trade him for the world. He’s the best teammate you can ask for. He has the money for it, but it’s just paying for that love and that loyalty that he brings every day.”

Stewart is a controversial player who is known for his physical play and his short temper. The latter reappeared last week when he stormed off the bench to defend his teammates during their brawl with the Hornets, and he received a 7-game suspension for it. He also memorably went after LeBron James during a 2021 game, and was even accused of punching an opposing player in the head prior to a game.

Stewart is the kind of player you love if he’s on your team and hate if he isn’t. The Pistons love him and value him for bringing a physical edge and protecting his teammates. Opponents would certainly see it differently, but you won’t see his teammates apologizing for his behavior.
