Former NBA All-Star critical of Lakers: I don’t think they are serious

Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins is convinced that the Los Angeles Lakers are not a serious club right now.

Cousins was a guest on “Run it Back” on FanDuel TV on Tuesday. He was asked by host Michelle Beadle about the possibility of Bronny James being added to the Lakers’ roster for NBA games rather than just playing in the G League. Cousins doesn’t seem too keen on the idea.

“I take it as a move as I don’t really think the Lakers are serious anymore,” Cousins said on the show. “I love everything that it stands for. I think what [LeBron] is doing with his legacy and a businessman and everything that comes with that, I think it’s a beautiful thing. I think it’s really, really dope. But as far as the Lakers actually competing, I take that as a sign that they aren’t really serious.”

Cousins added that he would have expected more offseason moves from the club. But he did note that he is a fan of the team’s selection of Dalton Knecht, whom the team drafted with the No. 17 overall pick in June.

Bronny James is expected to primarily be a G League player this season, though there may be times when he plays with the Lakers in their games. The team’s selection of James, who did not have a big role in his lone season of college ball at USC, has led to plenty of questions, so it’s not like Cousins is alone in his skepticism. Lakers fans are hoping the team will be able to repeat the success of 2022 when they made the conference finals, rather than make another first-round exit like they did in April.
