George Karl’s son to coach Lakers during summer league
The Los Angeles Lakers will be led by a familiar face during this year’s summer league play.
ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk reported Thursday that Coby Karl, son of veteran head coach George Karl, will be coaching the Lakers during the California Classic, a three-game set at the start of July in Sacramento. Former University of Arizona star Miles Simon will then be coaching the team during summer league in Las Vegas.
The younger Karl actually played for the Lakers, beginning his short-lived NBA career with them in the 2007-08 season. Additionally, he has served as the head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders, the Lakers’ G League affiliate, since 2016.
This year represents a step up to an extent for Karl, as Simon handled the summer league head coaching duties exclusively last year. Hopefully, the experience doesn’t result in a fiery tell-all book like his father’s though.
