Gilbert Arenas shares how he committed credit card fraud at strip clubs

Gilbert Arenas has gone viral again for his social media antics, this time for sharing a tale of how he committed credit card fraud at a strip club.

The former NBA All-Star shared on his Instagram account this week a post that details how he would profit at strip clubs.

According to what Arenas wrote, his strategy was to have the strip club charge him $80,000 in dollar bills to “make it rain.” He would throw about half of it, keep the other half, and then have a teammate sign for the large charge.

The next day, Arenas says he would call American Express and tell them his card was stolen and the charges weren’t his. He says the key was having someone else sign the bill so he could use that as proof to American Express that the card was stolen.

Arenas brags that he would then get the $80,000 charge refunded to his card, meaning he got to spend $40,000 at a club for fun and pocket around $40,000 without paying for any of it.

Here’s Arenas’ explanation on Instagram (censored for language):

We would typically say that Arenas is just joking around here and doing this for attention, but he seemed to double down on his claim. Not only did he leave that original Instagram post up on his account, but he posted again about it on Friday saying he’s not going to back down or say he was hacked. He also seemed to love that a website published a story about this, with the report that American Express was investigating him for potential fraud.

Is Arenas just messing around for attention again? Or do you think he actually did this? Could he be dumb enough to incriminate himself or does he think because it happened a decade ago that the statute of limitations have passed?

Knowing him, he probably didn’t give it much thought. Once one of the NBA’s most exciting players during a three-year stretch where he made the All-NBA team each season, Arenas is developing a reputation for being quite the social media troll. There’s this, his horrible jokes about the Flint water crisis, and the sexist things he said about WNBA players.

Mind you, Arenas earned over $140 million during his playing career, and countless more millions in endorsements. A multi-millionaire like that wouldn’t be dumb enough to commit such levels of fraud and brag about it, would he?
