San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has made a major decision about his future.
Popovich is stepping aside as head coach of the Spurs after 29 seasons. He will remain with the organization in the full-time role of team president.

ESPN’s Shams Charania says that Popovich has been around the team’s facilities recently, and has been involved in the day-to-day running of the franchise. However, Popovich recently came to the conclusion that he can no longer continue with the grind of being a head coach, even though he did want to return to the sidelines.
Popovich’s decision was likely down to his health, at least in part. The 76-year-old suffered a mild stroke on Nov. 2, and has not coached the team since. His recovery is said to be going well, but concerns arose two weeks ago when he suffered a medical emergency at a restaurant.
It had been reported in February that Popovich’s return to coaching was uncertain.
Popovich is one of the most successful and iconic coaches in the history of the NBA. He is the winningest coach in the history of the league, with 1,422 regular season victories. He has another 170 playoff victories, and won five NBA titles as head coach of the Spurs.
The Spurs will have to find a new head coach, though the job should attract plenty of interest. The team has a strong core of young talent led by Victor Wembanyama, and is well-positioned to become a contender again in the coming years.
