Jeff Van Gundy blasts Dallas fans for booing DeAndre Jordan, cheering Greg Hardy

Jeff Van GundyAnnouncer Jeff Van Gundy pointed out on Wednesday what he believes is a poor example set by Dallas sports fans.

On Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Clippers visited the Dallas Mavericks for the first time since DeAndre Jordan reneged on his decision to join the Mavericks in favor of a return to the Clippers. The fans booed Jordan and then cheered when he missed a shot.

The fans booing Jordan led Van Gundy to weigh in.

“I have no problem with his changing his mind,” Van Gundy said of Jordan’s decision. “That’s man’s greatest right is the right to change his mind. I do have a problem with him not directly contacting Mark Cuban to tell him about his change of mind.

“But I would also like the Dallas fans to acknowledge the sheer lunacy and absurdity that they’re booing DeAndre Jordan tonight and they’ll be cheering someone like Greg Hardy on Sunday. That to me is absurd. All this guy did was change his mind.”

Van Gundy’s point about Jordan’s actions is quite fair in a level-headed sense, but in a sports context, we know that it’s a simple matter of loyal fans booing the opposition and cheering for their team. And just because fans cheer the Dallas Cowboys does not mean they are specifically supporting Hardy, who is under even more scrutiny since photos of his ex-girlfriend were released. It’s certainly a powerful statement by Van Gundy, but to make a sweeping statement and accuse all Dallas fans of cheering for Hardy and booing Jordan is unfair.
