The poor Sacramento Kings can’t even make it through a simple ceremony without misfortune striking.

The Kings honored Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson for his service to the city during a second quarter timeout in Monday night’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive met Johnson at halfcourt and presented him with a basketball signed by hundreds of members of the Sacramento community. The gift was apparently so mesmerizing that Johnson completely missed the handshake that Ranadive was offering him, leaving the Kings owner to wallow in his own awkwardness. Here’s the moment in all of its cringeworthy splendor:

Talk about a party foul. And how about the look of somber resignation that slowly comes over Ranadive’s face as he realizes the magnitude of his failure?

Of course, both Ranadive and Johnson have seen more than their fair share of awkward moments during their respective tenures in Sacramento, so this is really nothing out of the ordinary.
