Report: NBA to host second bubble in Chicago for teams not invited to Orlando

Adam Silver

The NBA will be giving an opportunity for competition to the eight teams who did not make the cut for the official restart of play in Orlando.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Thursday that the NBA is close to signing off on a second bubble in Chicago for the teams who were not invited to Orlando. This will enable them to participate in mini-training camps and subsequent games against other clubs. The target date is said to be September.

The eight teams that did not receive an invite to Orlando were the Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Golden State Warriors. Play will begin in the Orlando bubble on July 30, and the NBA Finals are scheduled to run until October.

The second bubble will give those teams a chance to get in work and develop talent when they might otherwise have been on hiatus from the suspension of play this past March until next season’s scheduled start in December. We had already known that there was significant interest in such a setup, and the NBA has apparently listened to those concerns.
