Washington Wizards point guard John Wall caused a bit of a stir over the weekend by wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey to a Washington Redskins home game, and his head coach chimed in on the controversy Tuesday.
Wall, a lifelong Cowboys fan, attended Dallas’ 27-24 win over the Redskins on Sunday sporting the blue and white and drew the ire of many of his local Washington fans for doing so. Scott Brooks, who was hired as the Wizards’ new coach last April, was asked to respond to the episode in an appearance with Grant and Danny on 106.7 The Fan.
“I’ve been in a lot of NBA locker rooms,” Brooks said, per Bryan Frantz of CBS DC. As a player, I played for over a decade, I’ve coached for over a decade. And the one thing about NBA locker rooms — there’s so much trash-talking going on about who’s football team you support. And all these guys have their hometown teams or their childhood teams.
“I understand John is Cowboys fan, but the thing I love about John — he’s in the community here,” Brooks continued. “You can go back in his history of being a Wizard, he’s done a lot of community work here, and that’s what it’s about. We love what we do, we have a great platform, but we also have an obligation and a privilege to give back to the community.
“Maybe I should pass out Redskins jerseys on the first day of training camp,” Brooks added jokingly.
Well that’s one way for Brooks to endear himself to the D.C. faithful right off the bat. For Wall, who didn’t always get along with Brooks’ predecessor, hopefully football rooting interests aren’t a point of contention between him and his new head coach next season.
