Darrell Doucette sees no competition between flag football players and the NFL.
After helping Team USA demolish the two teams that consisted of former and current NFL players in Saturday’s Fanatics Flag Football Classic, Doucette set the record straight about his view of who should represent the United States in the flag football event in the 2028 Olympics.
“I mean, everyone wants to win gold for our country, but we just didn’t want to be overlooked. We didn’t want the names to overshadow the guys that’s been playing this game,” Doucette told Rich Eisen on a recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show.
“It was never NFL versus Team USA versus flag football players. It was more like, let us get our opportunity. Let us get our shine and let’s compete together.”
Doucette grabbed headlines and raised eyebrows in 2024 when he said that he’s better than Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes at flag football. Such a claim, involving a high-profile athlete, earned Doucette flak, even with all the context he provided.
On Saturday, Doucette perhaps felt a little vindicated, with Team USA going 3-0, winning all games by a combined margin of 62 points.
Those who believe that NFL players should represent the United States in flag football at the 2028 Olympics may not feel as strongly about it after Doucette and Team USA put on a clinic against stars like Tom Brady and Joe Burrow.
