The San Antonio Spurs are adding even more veteran assistance in the frontcourt.

The Spurs are signing free agent center Mason Plumlee to a 10-day contract, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Plumlee is in his 13th season in the NBA and is joining his 8th different team.

The Plumlee move could be seen as puzzling, given that the Spurs have several veteran options to back up superstar center Victor Wembanyama. Plumlee joins a San Antonio center group that already includes Wemby, Luke Kornet, Kelly Olynyk, and Bismack Biyombo.

The 35-year-old is a mobile big man, but probably not more agile than Luke Kornet at this point in their careers. Plumlee has some passing chops, but so does Olynyk on top of his ability to space the floor. Plumlee is also a decent rim protector with some size, but Biyombo already has those attributes covered in San Antonio.

Plumlee becomes the fourth center on a Spurs roster headlined by Wembanyama, who already eats up about 30 minutes per contest.

The Spurs signed Plumlee just a week after letting go of former top-10 draft pick Jeremy Sochan. Plumlee, who played with the Charlotte Hornets earlier this season, has averaged 1.9 points and 2.9 rebounds through 14 games.
