Report: Wizards a ‘legitimate threat’ to sign Kevin Durant
We have already heard plenty of rumors about where Kevin Durant could end up if and when he becomes a free agent this summer, and the Washington Wizards are a team that seems to come up quite frequently.
The Wizards believe they have a shot at signing Durant, as evidenced by their insistence upon keeping cap space clear and the fact that they hired one of his former high school coaches over the summer. And Ken Berger of CBSSports.com recently reported that talk of Durant heading to the nation’s capital is more than just hot air.
Berger mentioned Washington’s chances of signing Durant when discussing the team’s decision to hold off on giving Bradley Beal a contract extension until after the season.
Ditto for Beal, whose Washington Wizards continue to lurk as a legitimate threat to the Oklahoma City Thunder’s efforts to keep Kevin Durant when he hits the unrestricted market on July 1, league sources say.
Durant has insisted on numerous occasions that he does not want to leave the Thunder, and that could very well be the case. But he did grow up in the D.C. area, and if he ends up leaving the place he calls home now it would stand to reason that he’d be interested in returning to the place he used to call home.
One superstar player has already admitted he is going to recruit Durant, and other scenarios have been laid out with teams that make some sense. K.D. also stoked the fire a bit recently when he said he wants to own a piece of the Washington Redskins.
Unless the Thunder reach an extension with Durant before he becomes a free agent, which is highly unlikely, the Wizards talk isn’t going anywhere.
