Andrzej Fonfara beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to a pulp in the ring, and then he hit him with a few more jabs after their fight Saturday at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs), who won after Chavez’s corner called off the fight following the ninth round, said in his postfight interview on Showtime that he could tell in the first round that Chavez Jr. lacked punching power.
“I know Chavez is tough fighter. He don’t quit. He’s like (in) good shape,” the Polish fighter said. “But when I start first round, I know I win this fight. He hit me like one good punch. I catch it and I say, ‘this guy don’t have punch’ because he punch me the hardest he can in first round. I open up and move because I don’t afraid his punches and his power.”
Fonfara, who is a true light heavyweight compared to Chavez Jr. who had no business fighting in the weight class, also noted he was irritated that Chavez Jr. said he couldn’t throw body shots. He said he made a point to do that.
Chavez Jr. might not have been in the best mindset after the fight because he said he wanted a rematch at the same weight. Hopefully his team will talk him out of repeating his mistake and convince him to drop back down in weight.
