An NCAA Division I college basketball coach was unexpectedly fired on Tuesday following an investigation into his conduct.

Paul Corsaro was fired as the head coach at IU Indy after the school conducted an investigation into allegations against him. Jeff Goodman of Field of 68 was the first to report the news, and IU Indy later confirmed it.

The school issued a brief statement without providing details of what led to the surprising decision.

“His behavior did not meet the university’s values and standards regarding the treatment of student athletes,” IU Indy said.

According to a report from Kevin Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star, six families of players who transferred from IU Indy following last season submitted a formal complaint to the university. The complaint, which was filed by attorney Rex Elliott of the Cooper Elliott Law Firm in Columbus, Ohio, cited “deep concerns regarding the culture and treatment of student athletes within the IU Indianapolis men’s basketball program under head coach Paul Corsaro.”

“Our concerns regarding the IU Indianapolis men’s basketball program extend far beyond the normal challenges or demands of student-athlete life and into abuse both physically, emotionally, and an environment of intimidation, bullying, retaliation, and fear,” the complaint said.

Elliott told the Indy Star that Corsaro’s firing is “certainly warranted” and that “abusive coaches cross the line far too many times” in college athletics today.

Corsaro went 10-22 in his first and only season with IU Indy, which was an improvement after the Jaguars won just 14 games combined in their three seasons under former head coach Matt Crenshaw.

The 36-year-old Corsaro previously coached the University of Indianapolis. He went 68-25 over his last three seasons with the program and made back-to-back NCAA Division II tournament appearances.

IU Indy made headlines during the season after their team bus burst into flames on a road trip.
