Plenty of buzz picked up on Thursday evening suggesting that Mike Anderson was the new favorite for the St John’s men’s basketball head coaching job.

The Red Storm is looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Chris Mullin following the season. They targeted Bobby Hurley, but he turned them down to stay at Arizona State. Next was Loyola-Chicago’s Porter Moser, who also turned them down.

Now reporters are saying Anderson is the favorite.

Newsday’s Roger Rubin said he’s heard Anderson is getting the job.

Jon Rothstein reported that Anderson was the favorite.

Sources: Mike Anderson is emerging as a strong favorite to be the next head coach at St. John's. Former head coach at Arkansas, Missouri, and UAB. #SJUBB

Anderson was fired by Arkansas after eight middling seasons on the job. He took the Razorbacks to the tournament three times but was fired after going 18-16 last season. Before Arkansas, Anderson spent five seasons at Missouri and four at UAB. He has a .649 winning percentage overall as a head coach.
