Brian Kelly sends message to the reporter he called out

LSU coach Brian Kelly is distancing himself from the comments he made about a reporter following his team’s win over Florida on Saturday.

Kelly opened his Monday press conference with an apology to WBRZ reporter Michael Cauble. Kelly had reacted angrily to one of Cauble’s questions following Saturday’s game, and accused the reporter of asking “ridiculous questions” (video here).

“I’ve texted with Mike and offered my apology to him for the way I handled the questioning. I think it’s important to understand that my standards, relative to how we work with the media on a day to day basis, need to be higher. I take responsibility for that and I need to be better in the future.”

Kelly added that he did also feel the need to “defend my team,” but it did not excuse his response to Cauble’s question about the Tigers’ run game.

Kelly undoubtedly came off overly defensive about a relatively mundane question about LSU’s underwhelming run game in a 20-10 win. The coach dressed down Cauble in public, and it only got worse for Kelly when the video went viral.

The LSU coach can be very hard on his own players, to say nothing of the media. This was a big win for his program, and he clearly did not appreciate the negative line of questioning. Once he cooled down, he clearly saw that it was a bad look for him.
