Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has been away from the team in recent days as he deals with an undisclosed health issue.

Sanders has been spending time at his estate in Texas this offseason while he tends to an “unspecified health issue,” according to a report from Brian Schrotenboer of USA Today. The 57-year-old coach was not with the Buffaloes last week as their annual summer football camps began.

Sanders has attended Colorado’s summer football camps the past two years, and USA Today notes that they are listed as part of his official duties in his contract.

Deion Sanders Jr., Sanders’ oldest son, said in a YouTube live stream on Sunday that his father is “feeling well.” However, Sanders Jr. said he does not know when Deion will return to Boulder.

“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he’s going through, what he went through,” Sanders Jr. said in the stream, according to USA Today. “When we get back to Boulder, I don’t know. I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m going to sit here with him.”

Sanders was scheduled to speak in Florida at the Sickle Cell Disease Research and Educational Symposium on Sunday, but his appearance was cancelled due to what the organization called “an unavoidable last-minute scheduling change.”

In an appearance on Asante Samuel’s “Say What Needs to be Said Podcast” last month, Sanders indicated he was dealing with a health issue. Samuel told Sanders he hopes the Hall of Fame defensive back is feeling well. Sanders responded by saying “what I’m dealing with right now is at whole ‘nother level” and revealing that he has lost 14 pounds.

Sanders has battled health issues in recent years

Sanders has been open about some of the health issues he has dealt with over the past few years. He had two toes amputated on his left foot in 2021 because of blood clots that developed after a surgery. Sanders said at one point doctors feared he might lose his entire leg.

In 2023, Sanders had to have an emergency surgery to address a different blood clot.

It is unclear if Sanders’ latest health condition is related to the blood-clot issues he has had.

Sanders led Colorado to a 9-4 record in his second season last year after the Buffaloes finished 4-8 in 2023. Colorado will have a much different look this season after Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter left for the NFL.
