A welcome change could be coming to the NCAA football transfer portal window, but many fans were left wondering the same thing after the news surfaced on Thursday.
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee voted on Thursday to move from two transfer portal windows to a single transfer portal window, which would be a 10-day period beginning on Jan. 2. There are currently two windows during which players can transfer — one in December and one in April.
The change would need approval from another committee by Oct. 1 in order to take effect for the 2025-26 season.
As “Emergency Legislation,” it requires approval from the Administrative Committee by Oct. 1 to take effect this year. The NCAA is in the midst of restructuring and populating committees under the new governance structure. https://t.co/nTSG9qvkOM

The December transfer window has been problematic for football programs, as it opens prior to the start of the College Football Playoff and during bowl season. That has resulted in situations where players have had to make the difficult decision to leave their schools in the middle of a championship pursuit. You can argue that those players are under no obligation to do so, but there is only so much NIL money to go around. Those who wait might miss out on opportunities.
This season, the College Football Playoff will run from Dec. 19 through Jan. 19. If the transfer portal window were to open on Jan. 2, both the semifinals and national championship game would be held during or after the 10-day transfer period.
Many people feel the window should be pushed to after the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Why wouldn’t this just be after the season? Makes 0 sense

Winow should open after the NC game, not during playoff runs and bowl games.

So the good teams get screwed by the timing again.

I wish it started after the CFP & bowl games were over, but this is definitely better than in December

The issue is likely that pushing the window back any further would interfere with the spring semester. The spring semester begins in mid-to-late January for most schools, so pushing the window any later might prevent transfers from being able to enroll at new schools on time.
Teams that are in the College Football Playoff semifinals are unlikely to have as many players who are looking to transfer. The timing of the single window still would not be perfect, but we know one prominent coach who would likely be very pleased with it.
