SEC commissioner has big threat for teams that fake injuries

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey is trying to crack down on coaches directing players to feign injury during games.

In a memo sent to SEC coaches and athletic directors, Sankey ordered teams to stop having players fake injury in order to slow games down and create additional timeouts. He added that the SEC will begin looking into feigned injuries, and began penalizing coaches whose teams are found to take part in the practice.

Notably, Sankey says that coaches will be suspended for one game for a third fake injury offense, and concludes by instructing schools to “play football and stop the feigned injury nonsense.”

Greg Sankey sent a memo to SEC coaches & ADs ordering them to stop directing players to feign injuries & instituting penalties that include, on a 3rd offense, a coach suspension, per a copy obtained by @YahooSports.

Players faking injuries to slow down games has become a major talking point this season. Ole Miss has been pointed to as a major offender, so much so that they actually issued a statement about it earlier in the campaign.

The SEC’s stance might not necessarily placate those who want a full-scale rule against the practice, but they will likely see it as a step in the right direction.
