Greg Schiano, Rutgers reportedly unable to come to head coaching agreement

Greg Schiano appeared to be in line to become the next head football coach at Rutgers as soon as the school fired Chris Ash back in September, but the deal may now be dead.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported on Sunday that Schiano and Rutgers were unable to come to an agreement for a reunion.

According to NJ.com, Rutgers has been exploring potential backup options in case they could not come to an agreement with Schiano. Two candidates they are considering are Michigan linebackers coach Anthony Campanile and Los Angeles Rams assistant coordinator for offense Jedd Fisch. Both are from New Jersey.

There was a point recently when Schiano was supposedly on the verge of being announced as Rutgers’ coach, but he reportedly had some very lofty demands in negotiations with the school. It’s possible that the two sides could still hammer out a deal, but it sounds like they have hit more than a minor snag.

Schiano enjoyed great success as the head coach at Rutgers from 2001-2011. He resigned as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator back March, and a report said he resigned so that he would be available in case Rutgers fired Ash. Ash was fired after a 52-0 loss to Michigan on Sept. 28. He had gone 8-32 in four seasons as the program’s head coach.

Schiano got back into coaching on Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State from 2016-2018 and actually was hired to take the Tennessee job, but a fan revolt scuttled the hire, leading Schiano back to the Buckeyes last year.
