Report: Jim McElwain a strong candidate for Central Michigan job

Jim McElwain

Jim McElwain could be getting back in the head coaching world in college football.

McElwain is a strong candidate to fill the vacancy at Central Michigan, according to Football Scoop.

McElwain, 56, is coaching wide receivers on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan. He had success at Colorado State from 2012-2014, going 22-16 over three seasons, which helped him land the Florida job. He went 19-8 and won the SEC East in his first two seasons at Florida, but was fired amid a 3-4 start last year.

Central Michigan is looking for a new coach after parting ways with John Bonamego, who went 1-11 this season. The Chippewas have been a starting point for a few head coaches who went on to bigger jobs. From 2004-2009, Brian Kelly and Butch Jones coached Central Michigan for three seasons apiece. Both then went on to coach Cincinnati after their three years with the Chippewas.

McElwain would be a home run hire for the program.
