Jimmy Sexton: Texas is only job Nick Saban would consider

Nick SabanTexas is the only job Nick Saban would consider leaving Alabama for, the coach’s agent told Longhorns officials in January, according to a report.

You may recall it was revealed in September that Sexton spoke with a current and former Texas regent in January shortly after Alabama won the national championship. Former regent Tom Hicks, who used to own the Texas Rangers, asked current Longhorns coach Mack Brown whether he was ready to retire. Brown said no, so the issue was dropped. When presented with questions about the report, Saban said he hadn’t spoken to anyone and didn’t know about the rumors.

While that may be true, Sexton supposedly told Texas that their football job was the only one Saban would consider leaving Bama for.

“Sexton confirmed that UT is the only job Nick would possibly consider leaving Alabama for, and that his success there created special pressure for him,” Hicks wrote in a September email to his brother/current regent Steve Hicks, per the AP.

Saban said he was too old to start over somewhere else. He also has built so much of a dynasty at Bama that it would be difficult to envision him leaving. I think this was simply a matter of logic; Texas could use a new coach, so they started with the best one out there. While Saban must respect the job and recognize that it’s on par with Bama, he probably knows he realistically can’t leave.

If anything, this report should just show us how prestigious the Texas job is should it become vacant.
